Current account in Spain
A Spanish cuenta corriente with an IBAN is where your salary, SEPA transfers, and usually rent by direct debit (domiciliación bancaria) are handled. Banks typically ask for a valid ID, your NIE or TIE, proof of address, and sometimes your empadronamiento or enrolment letter. Digital onboarding is common, but limits may apply until your documents are fully verified.
- Large retail banks: e.g. Santander, BBVA, CaixaBank — wide branch networks and student packs; read fee schedules (“comisiones”) carefully.
- Online/direct banks: e.g. ING, Openbank — often low routine fees if conditions are met.
- Neobanks and multi-currency apps: e.g. Revolut, N26 — fast setup; compare FX, cash deposit options, and how your Spanish IBAN is provided.
Check whether “cuenta sin comisiones” requires minimum income, direct deposit of salary, or card use. Confirm the app and contract language (English) if you need it, and how strong customer authentication works for payments.
First-month cash and housing costs
Beyond rent, budget for the fianza (deposit — legally capped for many urban flats), possible agency fees, first utility set-up, and household basics. Student visa routes may require proof of funds; that amount is not always the same as real-life settling costs.
Account setup: practical checklist
- Compare maintenance fees, card charges, ATM networks, and foreign-use costs.
- Complete identity verification (video or branch); keep NIE/TIE and address proof ready.
- Turn on alerts, daily limits, and device security for mobile banking.
- For rent and insurance, only set up domiciliación or transfers once beneficiary details are verified — payment fraud happens.
- Keep your registered address and tax details consistent across bank, employer, and landlord where required.
Renting and credit files
Landlords and agencies may check solvency. Spain uses credit and delinquency files (e.g. ASNEF-type listings). Pay phone and utility bills on time, avoid unpaid defaults, and if you are asked for an aval (guarantor) or rent guarantee product, read the total cost and exit terms.
Domestic payments
- Transferencia: standard SEPA credit transfer via IBAN.
- Domiciliación / adeudo directo: the creditor pulls funds; you can dispute incorrect debits within legal time limits — review movements often at the start.
- Bizum: very common for small peer-to-peer payments between individuals; limits and rules depend on your bank’s implementation.
Cards and cash
Contactless card and phone payments are widely accepted in cities; cash still appears in smaller shops and markets. Carry a debit card that works reliably on Spanish POS terminals.
Home contents and liability
Many leases require seguro de hogar (home insurance) or named interests. Responsabilidad civil cover for accidental harm to others is often bundled or available cheaply — read exclusions (drones, vehicles, etc.).
Saving and investing (basics)
- Cuentas remuneradas for short-term cash; rates and tiers change with market conditions.
- Indexed funds / ETFs via brokers — watch fees, withholding, and only invest with a multi-year horizon.
Tax residents may have to report foreign assets and rights above certain thresholds (historically linked to form 720 and related rules). Obligations and case law evolve — confirm current requirements with the Agencia Tributaria or a qualified adviser. Keep payslips, tax notices, and bank records aligned with what you file.
