Healthcare in New York for international students

The US system is primarily private and insurance. In New York, Medicaid isexpanded (ACA)⚠️ Check with KFF/CMS before relying on guidance alone.. As an F-1 you usually don’t have Medicaid: account on campus or marketplace insurance.

New York combines the most expensive rental market in the country (Manhattan often over $3,800/month for a studio apartment) with excellent public transportation. Outside of NYC, many SUNY campuses have more manageable costs.

Mandatory insurance on campus

SUNY/CUNY require or offer plan. Typical universities: Columbia, NYU, CUNY, SUNY, Cornell (Ithaca).

  1. Read insurance enrollment emails on day one.
  2. Choose campus plan or requestwaiver with proof of equivalent coverage (strict deadlines).
  3. Download digital card and check provider network near campus.
  4. Understand copay, deductible and what excludes (dental, maternity, mental health).

Costs without network

  • Emergency room (approximate average New York): about $3,500 without insurance — one visit can generate much higher bills with tests.
  • Campus health center: Basic visits often included or at a low copay if you are enrolled in the plan.
