Information guide for international students, not individual legal, tax or medical advice. The rules depend on citizenship, course and visa conditions: before paying or submitting an application, always check the updated text of the indicated authority.

Offer of place and provider

The offer of place must come from a suitable provider and describe the course, duration, methods and requirements. Check that the provider is a signatory of the Code for international students. Read refund policy and conditions before paying the fee: admission does not guarantee the visa and a subsequent change may require a new application.

Fee Paying Student Visa

The application demonstrates identity, offer of place, tuition payment or accepted modality, maintenance funds, money/ticket to leave the country, health, character and genuine intention to study. For many tertiary courses INZ publishes NZD 20,000 per year or NZD 1,667 per month under the year, but you must use the current amount and the exact category. Explains source and availability of funds; sponsor or guarantor must comply with the requirements and provide consistent evidence.

  1. Check provider, course and Code signatory status.
  2. Prepare offers, tuition, funds, outward travel and insurance.
  3. Upload scans and translations according to INZ instructions.
  4. Quickly complete medical exams, chest X-rays or police certificates if requested.
  5. After eVisa, check dates and conditions before traveling or working.

Insurance and well-being

The policy must be acceptable to the provider and consistent with the Code; Don’t buy a random cover just because it’s cheap. Check start/end, repatriation, previous conditions and excluded activities. The institution maintains support responsibilities, but you must maintain the required coverage.

Conditions during the course

Maintain registration, attendance and satisfactory progress. The work conditions are written on the eVisa: from 3 November 2025 many eligible students can have up to25 hours per week, but an old visa with 20 hours does not change on its own and may require change of conditions. Full-time work during scheduled breaks depends on the conditions. Changing providers or programs is not a simple administrative update: a new student visa is often required.

Renewal, post-study and consultancy

Start your new case before the deadline and don’t assume a late application will fix your status. After a suitable qualification, the Post Study Work Visa can exist, with duration and rights linked to the qualification; check the rules in force when you complete. For immigration advice use an IAA registered licensed immigration adviser or a legally exempt person, such as a New Zealand lawyer: the education agent is not automatically authorized to give immigration advice.

Official sources to open before acting

Check provider, program and code

Check provider and qualification in NZQA or relevant authority registers, NZQF level, campus, mode and duration. Being “approved” does not mean that every program gives the same work or post-study rights. The offer must include met requirements and estimated tuition. Check that the provider is signatory of the Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code and read complaints, withdrawal and refund rules.

Build a coherent file

Prepare study, work, travel and previous visa history. Explain why that program in New Zealand, how your journey progresses and how it is funded. INZ compares forms and tests: conflicting dates or qualifications must be corrected, not hidden. If gaps, waste, or industry changes exist, attach a documented explanation. Do not use a standard agent statement.

Maintenance and outward travel funds

The published threshold must be demonstrated in the forms accepted by category and duration. Create a schedule with tuition, NZD 20,000/year or current monthly amount, insurance and outgoing travel. Link each account to its owner and origin. Recent deposits, informal sponsors or undocumented loans require explanation. A ticket must be usable; alternatively demonstrate separate funds to purchase it.

The migration threshold does not measure Auckland rent or unexpected events. Maintain a higher budget and don’t include future work as evidence of funds already needed. If a family member finances, keep income, relationship and declaration of support. Don’t temporarily transfer money just to build a balance.

Tuition, receipts and Approval in Principle

Follow the instructions on the proof of payment. In some cases INZ may use an approval in principle prior to tuition, but this is not automatic. Pay only to the verified provider or channel and keep receipt with student and course. Read what happens if your visa is refused, including non-refundable fees and currency exchange.

Health, x-rays and character

Requirements depend on duration, countries visited/residence and medical history. If required, use panel physician and eMedical. Chest X-ray and medical certificate have validity rules. Police certificates must come from authorities designated by INZ and may require translation. State convictions, accusations and precedents with precision: failure to disclose can weigh more than the original fact.

Documents and translations

Scan complete, readable pages. For non-English documents, attach a certified translation according to INZ and the original. Keep names consistent; explains differences due to marriage or transliteration. Don’t edit PDFs or rely on machine translations for certificates. Keep an exact copy of the file sent.

eVisa, travel conditions and arrival

Read start/expiry, entries and conditions before booking. A valid visa to stay does not guarantee return if travel conditions do not allow it. Bring eVisa, offer, accommodation and proof of accessible funds. At the border, respond consistently and declare goods in the Traveler Declaration.

Attendance, progress and communication

Participate and maintain satisfactory progress. The provider can report violations or termination of enrollment. For illness or crisis, ask for approved leave and keep certificates. Update contacts at providers and INZ when required. Don’t disappear from the course while you evaluate alternatives.

Change program or provider

A substantial change normally requires a new student visa, not just a new offer. Check level, duration, working conditions and post-study before cancelling. Obtain INZ/licensed adviser opinion and written confirmation from new provider. Coordinate refunds, insurance and deadlines to avoid periods without enrollment.

Variation of conditions and working hours

From 3 November 2025 the increase to 25 hours concerns new visas and eligible categories; a 20 hour condition remains until changed. Read eVisa. To add work rights or modify the studio, variations with fees and tests may be needed. Don’t start based on the receipt.

Partners, children and minor students

Family options depend on program and qualification. Partnership must be genuine and stable, with evidence of cohabitation and finances. Consider insurance, funds and your children’s schooling. Minors have strengthened accommodation and pastoral care: any change must be agreed with the provider.

Regulated consultancy, complaints and appeals

Only licensed immigration advisers and exempt persons can give immigration advice. Check the IAA register. An education agent can assist with admissions but is not automatically licensed. Decisions indicate available reconsideration/appeal and terms: act now. For providers use internal process first, then NZQA or relevant body; iStudent Complaints handles specific international contractual/financial disputes.

Archive and personal calendar

Save offers, receipts, applications, eVisa, policy, attendance and messages. Keep encrypted backup offline and don’t share accounts. Record passport expiry, visa expiry, tuition dates, insurance end, scheduled breaks and monthly review. Every major change must be evaluated before being implemented.

Practical case manual

These scenarios do not replace an individual assessment: they serve to recognize the problem, stop the risky action and identify the next control.

  • Case 1— Offer with wrong campus: get correct document before applying; location and method can affect costs and authenticity.
  • Case 2— Newly received funds: Document source, relationship, and availability. An isolated balance does not prove real maintenance.
  • Case 3— Sponsor changes jobs: update evidence if INZ asks; do not hide a material change during the evaluation.
  • Case 4— Police certificate late: order from the indicated source, keep the receipt and reply within the deadline requesting instructions, do not send a different certificate.
  • Case 5— The doctor is referred: wait for the process and provide the requested specialist reports. Don’t reapply to get around it.
  • Case 6— You have a previous refusal: declare the decision and differences of the new file. INZ can compare previous practices.
  • Case 7— Renewed passport: update eVisa linkage before travel and bring both documents if indicated.
  • Case 8— You want to start work: read the hours and conditions on eVisa; the general page does not replace the document.
  • Case 9— The old visa says 20 hours: request a change or new visa if suitable; 25 hours does not apply retroactively on its own.
  • Case 10— The provider approves the break: also checks INZ impact, attendance and end date; academic approval does not automatically change the visa.
  • Case 11— Changes from degree to diploma: get new offer and evaluate new student visa before cancellation.
  • Case 12— The course ends early: ask how it affects the period of stay and subsequent options; do not assume the original deadline.
  • Case 13— You must travel: check multiple-entry/travel conditions and validity on return, not just expiry to stay.
  • Case 14— An adviser asks for RealMe password: don’t share it; verify IAA license and keep a copy of the application.
  • Case 15— Education agent guarantees residence: separates admission from immigration advice and checks current rules directly.
  • Case 16— Provider closes or withdraws course: maintain communications and contact NZQA/INZ; Don’t buy a new random route right away.
  • Case 17— You have a partner or child: correctly declare relationship, funds and travel; check work/student visa options related to your qualification.
  • Case 18— Receive potential prejudicial information: respond within the deadline point by point, with context and evidence, preferably with regulated advice.
  • Case 19— Visa is expiring: submit a complete application on time; interim visa is born only under precise conditions and has its own conditions.
  • Case 20— Post Study Work Visa evaluations: check qualification, location/study requirements and timing of the year of completion, not rules seen at registration.

How to manage a practice without losing control

Treat each application as an evidentiary file. Create an index with requirement, document, issuing authority, date, translation and page. Before sending, compare your passport, form, CV, offer/CoE and previous entries: names, dates and activities must tell the same story. If an answer does not fit the field, attach a numbered note that specifically addresses the question. Don’t upload dozens of files without explanation or rename a document in a deceptive way.

Keep an immutable copy of the submitted package and a separate working folder. Record receipt, application number, deadlines and messages. Communications often arrive in the portal before the email; check it regularly. A request for information should not be construed as a refusal, but the response must be complete, timely and to the point. If you can’t get a document, demonstrate attempts and ask for instructions - don’t invent substitutes.

When you really need a professional

A standard, documented case can be handled by reading the official instructions. Seek regulated advice when you have refusals or cancellations, unlawful status, criminal record, relevant medical conditions, complex family members, incorrect information already submitted, material change of route or imminent deadlines. Verify license and identity in the official register, sign a written engagement with scope, fees and document management and pay on a verified professional account.

Ask the advisor to distinguish law, policy, practice and your risk assessment. No one can guarantee concession or timing. Maintain access to the portal and receive a copy of every communication. If a strategy requires omitting a fact, creating a relationship or showing money that isn’t actually available, stop: the risk of false information can outweigh the problem you wanted to hide.

Final check before each shipment

Reread the question as a decision maker who doesn’t know you. Check validity of passport, quality of scans, translations, signature, payment and deadline time zone. Check that links and contacts are official, that the card allows the operation and that the receipt is saved. After submitting, do not change your life based solely on the expectation of approval: maintain existing status, registration, insurance and conditions until a new decision produces effects.
