Pechino

China

Beijing, the capital of China, is the political, cultural and academic heart of the country: it is home to Tsinghua and Peking University, the two best Chinese universities, as well as a huge tech ecosystem and a thousand-year history (Forbidden City, hutong). It's safe, with a giant, cheap subway; the challenges for those arriving are language, visa bureaucracy and some digital restrictions.

Areas to be careful with

very crowded and busy areas during rush hour (pickpocketing rare but possible), some peripheral areas and construction sites far from the centre, Be careful of rental scams: use reliable agencies or platforms

  • Beijing is one of the safest large cities in the world for street crime, which is very low; the main risk is rental scams and inconveniences from traffic and pollution.
  • The language barrier is the biggest challenge: outside international environments, English is not widely spoken; learning a little Chinese and using translation apps helps a lot.
  • For payments and services WeChat/Alipay is needed; for Western sites often a VPN. Register at the local police station within 24 hours of arrival (or via hotel/university).

Student perspective: Students: Haidian is the academic heartland (Tsinghua, PKU, BLCU); Changping for satellite campuses and low prices. For international life it is better to get closer to Chaoyang.
