An elegant port city in Kansai, squeezed between Mount Rokko and the sea, Kobe is one of the most cosmopolitan and livable cities in Japan. Open to foreigners since 1868, it retains an international soul (the western houses of Kitano, the Chinatown of Nankinmachi) and is famous for Kobe beef, Nada sake, fashion and jazz. Rebuilt after the 1995 earthquake, it offers spectacular views, an excellent quality of life and proximity to Osaka (20-30 minutes by train) and Kyoto.
