Heart of the Kansai region and second metropolitan area of ​​Japan, Osaka is the most informal, warmest and most "easygoing" city in the country, the undisputed capital of food (takoyaki, okonomiyaki, the philosophy of kuidaore, "eating until you ruin yourself"). Areas to be careful with

the Kamagasaki/Airin (Nishinari) area and some streets south of Namba in the evening, crowded entertainment areas of Minami (Namba/Dotonbori) late at night, solicitors and scam clubs in the nightlife streets

  • Osaka is overall very safe, although it has a slightly rougher reputation than Tokyo. Violent crime is rare; the greatest risk is concentrated in a few areas (the Kamagasaki area in Nishinari) and in the nightlife streets of Minami, where solicitors and scam clubs exist.
  • The people of Osaka are famous for their friendliness, informality and sense of humor: the city is warmer and more approachable than Tokyo.
  • As everywhere in Japan, unwritten rules count a lot (order, silence on trains, separate waste collection) and knowing a little Japanese helps with bureaucracy and daily life.

Questions about moving to Osaka

Is Osaka a good city for students?

Yes: it's home to great universities (Osaka University, Osaka Metropolitan University, Kansai, Kindai) and lively student life, in a city that's cheaper and more approachable than Tokyo. Some courses are in English (e.g. Ritsumeikan OIC), but Japanese helps a lot. The cost of living is lower and the people are warm; like everywhere in Japan, the initial costs for the house must be taken into account.

Is Osaka a good city for workers?

Yes: it is the economic heart of Kansai, strong in trade, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, electronics and services, with many companies having their headquarters here. It is less "global corporate" than Tokyo, but cheaper and more livable. For English-speaking profiles, the opportunities are fewer than in Tokyo, but the quality of life and lower costs are a great advantage.
