Information guide for international students, not individual legal, tax or medical advice. Requirements, amounts and procedures may change: always check the relevant source before acting.
Operational framework
In Ireland, citizenship, duration and form of the course determine different procedures. For an Italian the starting point is the EU right of free movement, without visa or ordinary immigration registration for the Italian citizen; for a non-EU student it is the entry visa when required, suitable course and registration of the permission at Immigration Service Delivery. The following sections separate the paths and indicate which evidence to keep.
EU citizens
Rule:An Italian enters with a valid document and can study without a visa or Irish Residence Permit. For stays longer than three months, however, he must continue to comply with EU conditions, for example as an enrolled student with resources and health coverage.
What to do:Keep admission, proof of means, EHIC or policy and address; do not ask for an IRP that is not provided for the EU citizen.
Operational verification:Link the rule «EU citizens» to the current source, your personal category and a dated proof; Note who can correct an error and by what deadline.
Non-EU students
Rule:Those who do not benefit from free movement must check whether a long-stay D visa is needed and, for stays over ninety days, register the permission after arrival.
What to do:Only use the ISD pathway applicable to your nationality, course duration and level; admission and visa do not replace registration.
Operational verification:Before closing «Non-EU students», verify the identity of the institution or counterparty, complete document, competent territory and receipt. Don’t rely on a verbal response.
ILEP and eligible course
Rule:Stamp 2 is linked to an eligible full-time course and published conditions; Stamp 2A has different conditions and does not give the same right to work.
What to do:Check provider, course and stamp type before paying tuition or non-refundable deposit.
Operational verification:Enter “ILEP and Eligible Course” in the transfer calendar with initiating event, deadline, variable cost and alternative plan if the document is rejected or delayed.
Registration and IRP
Rule:The student subject to registration must book, present passport, permit, registration, insurance and financial proof according to the current checklist.
What to do:Save appointment, receipt and IRP; immediately report errors on name, stamp or expiration.
Operational verification:Review «Registration and IRP» when address, course, duration, job or insurance change; retains the version of the official page consulted.
Resources and insurance
Rule:Non-EU students must demonstrate real access to funds and compliant private medical insurance, without relying on future employment.
What to do:Check the amount and evidentiary methods in force on the date of the application; maintain uninterrupted coverage.
Operational verification:Link the “Resources and Insurance” rule to the current source, your personal category, and dated proof; Note who can correct an error and by what deadline.
PPS Number
Rule:The PPSN identifies in relations with public services, work and taxation, but does not constitute a residence permit or general proof of residence.
What to do:Request it when you have a demonstrable need and protect your letter, number and MyGovID account.
Operational verification:Before closing «PPS Number», verify the identity of the institution or counterparty, complete document, competent territory and receipt. Don’t rely on a verbal response.
Renewal and progress
Rule:Stamp 2 requires timely renewal, compliance with the course, progression and overall limits of the student path.
What to do:Calendar IRP expiration, attendance, results and progression to a next level before the last month.
Operational verification:Enter «Renewal and Progress» in the transfer calendar with initial event, deadline, variable cost and alternative plan if the document is rejected or delayed.
Degree and Stamp 1G
Rule:The Third Level Graduate Program may allow eligible graduates to remain with Stamp 1G, but qualification level, duration and overall ceiling must be verified.
What to do:Request the final award and transcript on time and submit your request before the Stamp 2 deadline.
Operational verification:Review «Graduation and Stamp 1G» when address, course, duration, job or insurance change; retains the version of the official page consulted.
2026 immigration file: amounts, registration and progression
For a course leading to a stay over eight months, the current maintenance requirement is €10,000; up to eight months it is €833 per month, capped at €6,665. Visa-required students normally prove this in the visa application; non-visa-required students at registration. Supply six months of transactions, explain large lodgements and show genuine access. Tuition is additional, credit cards are not evidence, and an approved education bond of at least €10,000 may be available for degree programmes.
A non-EEA national staying over 90 days registers the permission. Stamp 2 requires a course already begun and listed on ILEP, plus the current passport, enrolment, insurance and finance evidence. The fee, when applicable, is €300 by card. Check delivery address and every detail on the IRP.
English-language students normally have at most three 25-week courses/two years before progressing to eligible higher education. Under the Third Level Graduate Programme, NFQ Level 8 normally gives 12 months; Level 9+ may give a further 12 months when graduate-job steps are proved, subject to overall seven/eight-year limits. Stamp 1G permits full-time employment but not self-employment.
How to manage a practice without losing control
Treat each application as an evidentiary file. Create an index with requirement, document, issuing authority, date, translation and page. Before sending, compare your passport, form, CV, offer/CoE and previous entries: names, dates and activities must tell the same story. If an answer does not fit the field, attach a numbered note that specifically addresses the question. Don’t upload dozens of files without explanation or rename a document in a deceptive way.
Keep an immutable copy of the submitted package and a separate working folder. Record receipt, application number, deadlines and messages. Communications often arrive in the portal before the email; check it regularly. A request for information should not be construed as a refusal, but the response must be complete, timely and to the point. If you can’t get a document, demonstrate attempts and ask for instructions - don’t invent substitutes.
When you really need a professional
A standard, documented case can be handled by reading the official instructions. Seek regulated advice when you have refusals or cancellations, unlawful status, criminal record, relevant medical conditions, complex family members, incorrect information already submitted, material change of route or imminent deadlines. Verify license and identity in the official register, sign a written engagement with scope, fees and document management and pay on a verified professional account.
Ask the advisor to distinguish law, policy, practice and your risk assessment. No one can guarantee concession or timing. Maintain access to the portal and receive a copy of every communication. If a strategy requires omitting a fact, creating a relationship or showing money that isn’t actually available, stop: the risk of false information can outweigh the problem you wanted to hide.
Final check before each shipment
Reread the question as a decision maker who doesn’t know you. Check validity of passport, quality of scans, translations, signature, payment and deadline time zone. Check that links and contacts are official, that the card allows the operation and that the receipt is saved. After submitting, do not change your life based solely on the expectation of approval: maintain existing status, registration, insurance and conditions until a new decision produces effects.
