Information guide for international students, not individual legal, tax or medical advice. Requirements, amounts and procedures may change: always check the relevant source before acting.
Operational framework
In Sweden, citizenship, duration and form of the course determine different procedures. For an Italian the starting point is the EU right of residence as a student, distinct from the registry registration at Skatteverket; for a non-EU student it is the residence permit for higher studies issued by Migrationsverket before entry when requested. The following sections separate the paths and indicate which evidence to keep.
EU citizens
Rule:An Italian can work without a work permit and can acquire the right of residence even as a worker.
What to do:Obtain contract, complete tax registration and retain proof of actual work.
Operational verification:Link the rule «EU citizens» to the current source, your personal category and a dated proof; Note who can correct an error and by what deadline.
Non-EU students from 2026
Rule:For bachelor/master’s permits granted from 11 June 2026 the ordinary limit is fifteen hours per week during the study period, with published exceptions and unlimited work in June, July and August.
What to do:Check the decision date, record hours per week and check exceptions directly with Migrationsverket.
Operational verification:Before closing «Non-EU students from 2026», verify the identity of the institution or counterparty, complete document, competent territory and receipt. Don’t rely on a verbal response.
Previous permits
Rule:Those who received the permit before June 11, 2026 are not immediately subject to the new limit, but the new conditions may apply to renewal.
What to do:Don’t assume that the old rule continues after a new decision.
Operational verification:Enter “Previous Permits” in the transfer calendar with initial event, expiration, variable cost and alternative plan if the document is rejected or delayed.
Contract
Rule:Sweden does not impose a general national minimum wage; pay and conditions often derive from collective agreements and industry practices.
What to do:Ask for kollektivavtal, pay, holidays, hours and insurance in writing.
Operational verification:Review «Contract» when address, course, duration, job or insurance changes; retains the version of the official page consulted.
Tax and A-tax/SINK
Rule:Skatteverket determines registration and withholding; SINK may apply to limited stays, while other cases use ordinary taxation.
What to do:Don’t choose the scheme from the promised net: present the real data and keep the decision.
Operational verification:Link the «Tax and A-tax/SINK» rule to the current source, your personal category and a dated proof; Note who can correct an error and by what deadline.
Time and environment
Rule:Working Hours Act, holidays and work environment apply according to relationship and sector.
What to do:Record shifts, rests and risks and contact safety representative or Arbetsmiljöverket when necessary.
Operational verification:Before closing «Time and environment», check the identity of the institution or counterparty, complete document, competent territory and receipt. Don’t rely on a verbal response.
Self-contained fake
Rule:F-tax and invoicing do not erase a substantially subordinate relationship.
What to do:Evaluate control, risk, tools and dependency before opening businesses.
Operational verification:Enter «False Self» in the transfer calendar with initial event, deadline, variable cost and alternative plan if the document is rejected or delayed.
Post-study transition
Rule:Paths for job search or work permit require completed studies, timely application and specific conditions; the rules changed in 2026.
What to do:Prepare your diploma, contract and insurance before the deadline and use the current Migrationsverket page.
Operational verification:Review «Post-study transition» when they change address, course, duration, job or insurance; retains the version of the official page consulted.
How the post-11 June 2026 limit works
For bachelor’s/master’s permits granted on or after 11 June 2026, the 15-hour weekly ceiling combines employers. It may be exceeded for work forming part of education, student representation/administration/research at the student’s institution, artistic research, and work in June, July or August. These are defined exceptions, not every lecture-free period.
A student may also exceed 15 hours for the permit’s remaining validity after completing higher education equivalent to at least two semesters, provided they are not applying for a new study permit below doctoral level. Keep transcript/confirmation. A breach may lead to withdrawal or extension refusal; record each week and remote work. Earlier permits follow transition rules until a later decision.
Sweden has no general statutory minimum wage. Identify kollektivavtal and document base pay, OB supplements, overtime, holiday pay, sickness, pension and insurance. Obtain the correct A-tax or SINK decision; personnummer does not establish withholding. Remote work performed in Sweden can count for immigration, tax and social-security purposes even for a foreign employer.
Personal payroll audit
Each pay cycle compares rosters, hours started/finished, breaks, classification, base rate, increases, allowances, deductions and net received. Record mandatory training, opening/closing and work requested out of shift separately. Don’t wait months: small repeated errors become difficult to reconstruct and some actions have short deadlines.
Keep evidence in a personal account, not just in the employer’s app. Download agreement, payslip and roster; Photograph timesheets if permitted and save messages about changes. Don’t bring customer data or company secrets: document your relationship without violating other people’s privacy.
Evaluate an offer
Before accepting, ask for the company’s legal name/number, location, duties, employment status, guaranteed hours, rate, pay cycle, proof, notice and responsible person. Compare travel costs and times with study and visa. A seemingly high contractor salary may be lower after tax, insurance, leave and non-billable time.
Refuse payments to obtain shifts, mandatory purchase of sponsorship, refund of cash and withheld documents. Do not sign blank sheets or fake timesheets. If housing and work depend on the same person, prepare an alternative plan: losing both increases the power of blackmail.
Proportionate escalation
For a simple error, send calculation and request with a reasonable deadline. For lack of salary, security, discrimination or migratory threat, immediately use the competent body, union, community legal service or student support. In an emergency, protect the person before the tests. Don’t accept a settlement or resignation without understanding waivers, taxes and visa consequences.
