Information guide for international students, not individual legal, tax or medical advice. The rules depend on citizenship, course and visa conditions: before paying or submitting an application, always check the updated text of the indicated authority.

Before applying: course, CRICOS and CoE

Check thatprovider and single courseresult in the CRICOS. After acceptance and required payments, the institution issues the Confirmation of Enrolment: check name, dates, level and campus. A conditional offer is not always a usable CoE. Maintain receipts and refund policies; if you use an agent, verify the relationship with the provider and never hand over your final ImmiAccount credentials.

Student visa (subclass 500)

The practice is normally presented online inImmiAccount. The document checklist tool indicates the attachments for passport, citizenship, provider and course; the file may require proof of financial ability, English, educational history, insurance, health and character. The evaluationGenuine Studentconsider coherence of the path and value of the course: answer with verifiable facts, not with copied standard texts. Non-English documents require translation in accordance with Home Affairs instructions.

  1. Get CoE and verify data and dates.
  2. Purchase OSHC appropriate to the required period.
  3. Fill out ImmiAccount personally and upload legible documents.
  4. Check any requests for biometrics, medical examination or integration immediately.
  5. Don’t assume approval: wait for the grant notification and read all the conditions.

Funds and documentary evidence

Home Affairs updates amounts and forms of proof. The point is not to show a balance for one day, but to document actual availability for travel, tuition and living. Incomplete statements, sudden unsourced payments, and unexplained sponsors can weaken your file. Use the checklist tool in your application and attach a brief summary when the funds come from multiple accounts, educational loan or parents. The real cost in the chosen city may exceed the migration threshold.

After release: VEVO and obligations

The grant letter should not be read just once. Check inVEVOworking conditions and duration; maintain enrollment, progression and required attendance, ongoing OSHC and updated contact details at the provider. Conditions may differ due to research, family members or particular cases. A change of course, level or provider can have consequences on the visa and educational contract: before canceling a CoE, ask for a written evaluation from the international office and, if necessary, from a registered migration agent or Australian lawyer.

Arrival and identification

The TFN is free and can be requested from the Australian Taxation Office; It’s not needed to get in, but it avoids unfavorable tax withholdings when you work. For bank, SIM and rent, passport, address and proof of registration may be needed. There is no municipal “residence” identical to the Italian one: the various bodies ask for their own proof of address.

Rejections, cancellations and consultancy

Don’t improvise appeals or new questions. The decision indicates whether a review exists, by which body and with what deadline. Only qualified professionals can provide regulated migration assistance: check the migration agents in the OMARA register; for legal matters use a lawyer admitted in the competent state.

Official sources to open before acting

Genuine Student: how to build a documentable response

The Genuine Student criterion is not a creative cover letter. Home Affairs wants to understand your current circumstances, reasons for choosing, knowledge of the course and the value the qualification will have for you. Connect each statement to a fact: previous studies, experience, program content, comparison with alternatives, financing and subsequent project. If you change areas, explain the transition with transferable skills and concrete goals. Avoid absolute promises on the migration future and answers identical to those of other candidates. Inconsistent statements with CVs, forms or visa history are more damaging than a well-explained non-linear story.

Prepare a history of study, work, travel and migration questions. Check official dates and names. If there are any breaks, refusals, name changes or dual citizenships, state them in the correct field and attach a brief explanation. Don’t hide a previous one because “it doesn’t appear on the new passport”: the questions concern the person, not the current document.

Financial capacity: file and budget are two different things

The visa proof must follow the practice’s document checklist tool. Your personal budget needs to be more conservative. Create a statement with tuition still due, travel, OSHC, initial housing, bond and twelve months of living; indicates the source, owner and liquidity of each sum. For family funds add relationship, income and consistent movements. An educational loan must be accompanied by a contract, available amount and disbursement conditions. Don’t take money for a photograph of the balance and then return it: it can become misrepresentation.

The cost published by Immigration is a threshold, not a quote. In Sydney or Melbourne rent and transport can take up much more than expected. Do not include work hours that are not yet authorized, a non-guaranteed salary or an unsigned room in the basic plan. Keep tuition and life funds separate; monitor the AUD exchange rate without attempting speculative operations.

Health, character, biometrics and translations

ImmiAccount communicates whether health examinations, biometrics or police certificates are needed. Only use panel physicians when required and carry HAP ID. Police certificates depend on the countries and periods of residence indicated, not just on citizenship. Start slow documents early but check validity and time window. Also answer correctly about medical conditions, convictions, charges and military service: “spent” or canceled in your home country does not automatically mean irrelevant to your Australian application.

For non-English documents, attach the original and translation with the required translator’s details. NAATI is the common reference in Australia; for translations made outside the country follow Home Affairs exactly. Transliterated names must be consistent with the passport. Merge front and back, do not cut stamps and name files legibly.

Times, bridging visa and travel

Processing times are indicative. Submitting a complete application reduces requests, but does not guarantee a date. Don’t buy non-refundable flights or let documents expire while you wait. If present onshore, any bridging visa has its own conditions and activation date; does not automatically authorize return after a trip. Before leaving Australia, check if you need Bridging Visa B and get it, instead of assuming that the application receipt is enough.

Conditions 8105, 8202 and continuous monitoring

The code of conditions on the grant letter matters more than online summaries. 8105 is commonly linked to work restrictions; the 8202 requires enrollment and progress/attendance according to the sector. There may be conditions on insurance, address or family members. Open VEVO after each new grant and save the result. If the university and the employer give different indications, stop and check with Home Affairs: the contract does not change the visa.

A period of course suspension, deferral or reduced study load must be approved according to the provider’s procedures and supported by permitted reasons. Stopping informal dating may lead to cancellation of the CoE. Store emails, certificates and decisions; due to illness or crisis ask for support before the progression becomes unsatisfactory.

Transfer, cancellation and refund

In the first months of the principal course, restrictions on transfers between registered providers set out in the National Code may apply. Submit a formal request and wait for the release when necessary. Don’t leave the old course because the new agent “already has everything sorted out.” Check new CoE, impact on visa duration, OSHC and refund policy. A different level qualification or an early termination may require migratory intervention.

Family members and minors

Partners and children must be declared correctly even when they are not traveling immediately. Relationship, funds, family OSHC, minors’ schooling and work conditions can change the cost radically. Don’t assume that adding a family member is automatic. For students under 18, approved welfare arrangements are required, such as CAAW or nominated guardian as appropriate; changing accommodation without authorization may affect your visa.

Student protection and complaints

Keep written agreements, receipts, CoE and refund terms. The Tuition Protection Service intervenes in specific provider defaults, not in every private dispute. Start from the internal complaints and appeals process; then use the ombudsman competent for the type of provider and the State. An academic complaint and a migration matter can proceed together but have different time limits.

Maintain separate folders for immigration, provider, health, home, employment and tax. Save PDF, not just links; records sending date and expiration. Keep encrypted offline copies and do not share OTPs. A monthly table with passport, visa expiry, CoE end date, OSHC end date, tuition deadlines and review appointments prevents most administrative errors.

Practical case manual

These scenarios do not replace an individual assessment: they serve to recognize the problem, stop the risky action and identify the next control.

  • Case 1— The CoE contains an incorrect date or campus: ask the provider for correction before applying; Don’t correct the PDF or explain the discrepancy in just an attachment.
  • Case 2— You have two packaged CoEs: reconstruct order, date and principal course; Visa duration, transfer and conditions may depend on the overall package.
  • Case 3— Sponsor account shows recent deposit: attach traceable source, income and reason for transfer. An affective declaration without financial capacity does not demonstrate real access.
  • Case 4— You already have an Australian or foreign refusal: declare it where required, attach the decision and explain what has changed. Omitting it can become a problem of false information.
  • Case 5— Your passport expires during the course: renew in advance and communicate the new details to Home Affairs; the electronic visa must be associated with the correct document.
  • Case 6— Receive a s56 request: respond within the deadline in the ImmiAccount, include everything asked and keep the receipt. Don’t send random attachments via email.
  • Case 7— The medical examination highlights a problem: do not anticipate the outcome. Home Affairs can request information or evaluate health requirements and waivers where applicable.
  • Case 8— You want to arrive well before the course: check visa start date and provider obligations. A granted visa does not authorize entry before the date shown.
  • Case 9— CoE is cancelled: contact provider and regulated professional immediately. Don’t wait for a visa cancellation letter to rebuild your options.
  • Case 10— Reduce study load: obtain formal approval for compassionate or compelling circumstances or other acceptable basis; an informal choice can violate progress and duration.
  • Case 11— Finish the course early: check new CoE end date and allowed period. The original visa date does not always guarantee that nothing will change after early completion.
  • Case 12— You want to move to a lower level course: first evaluate whether you need a new visa and the Genuine Student impact; Don’t cancel your current program on a seller’s word.
  • Case 13— An agent fills out the application: re-read each response and download the final copy. You are responsible for accuracy even if someone else pressed submit.
  • Case 14— Change address, email or phone: Update relevant providers and services. A lost message may contain a migration deadline or a request for documents.
  • Case 15— A family relationship is born or changes: check the obligation to notify and documents. Don’t use backdated statements to make it appear that you’ve been living together longer.
  • Case 16— You need to travel while an onshore application is pending: check substantive visa and bridging visa. Obtain the correct authorization before exiting.
  • Case 17— You have an academic emergency: contact international student support and maintain evidence. Timely support can enable a smooth procedure instead of abandonment.
  • Case 18— Receive a notice of intention to consider cancellation: the deadline is substantial. Get advice immediately and respond to points with evidence, not with a generic request for understanding.
  • Case 19— The provider closes: consult Tuition Protection Service and official communications; Don’t pay third parties who promise an immediate new CoE.
  • Case 20— You want to stay after the qualification: check eligibility for the next visa months before, but keep separate current 500 requirements and possible future rules.

How to manage a practice without losing control

Treat each application as an evidentiary file. Create an index with requirement, document, issuing authority, date, translation and page. Before sending, compare your passport, form, CV, offer/CoE and previous entries: names, dates and activities must tell the same story. If an answer does not fit the field, attach a numbered note that specifically addresses the question. Don’t upload dozens of files without explanation or rename a document in a deceptive way.

Keep an immutable copy of the submitted package and a separate working folder. Record receipt, application number, deadlines and messages. Communications often arrive in the portal before the email; check it regularly. A request for information should not be construed as a refusal, but the response must be complete, timely and to the point. If you can’t get a document, demonstrate attempts and ask for instructions - don’t invent substitutes.

When you really need a professional

A standard, documented case can be handled by reading the official instructions. Seek regulated advice when you have refusals or cancellations, unlawful status, criminal record, relevant medical conditions, complex family members, incorrect information already submitted, material change of route or imminent deadlines. Verify license and identity in the official register, sign a written engagement with scope, fees and document management and pay on a verified professional account.

Ask the advisor to distinguish law, policy, practice and your risk assessment. No one can guarantee concession or timing. Maintain access to the portal and receive a copy of every communication. If a strategy requires omitting a fact, creating a relationship or showing money that isn’t actually available, stop: the risk of false information can outweigh the problem you wanted to hide.

Final check before each shipment

Reread the question as a decision maker who doesn’t know you. Check validity of passport, quality of scans, translations, signature, payment and deadline time zone. Check that links and contacts are official, that the card allows the operation and that the receipt is saved. After submitting, do not change your life based solely on the expectation of approval: maintain existing status, registration, insurance and conditions until a new decision produces effects.
