Information guide for international students, not individual legal, tax or medical advice. The rules depend on citizenship, course and visa conditions: before paying or submitting an application, always check the updated text of the indicated authority.
Account, payments and budget
Compare fees, ATMs, currency exchange and international transfers; a bank may allow pre-opening but complete identification after arrival. Don’t send your entire annual fund to an account you just met. Build a budget in AUD with tuition, OSHC, bonds, rent in advance, transport, utilities and emergency fund: the migration threshold is not a promise on the real cost.
TFN and first salary
Request theTax File Numberfor free on the ATO website when you are eligible. Communicate this to the employer via the required statement, not in public chats or announcements. Without TFN high withholding taxes may apply. An ABN is needed for a truly self-employed business; don’t open it just because an employer wants to avoid award, leave, super and payroll.
Tax residence and declaration
“Resident for tax purposes” does not mean permanent resident for immigration purposes. Many students attending a long course may be tax residents, but the conclusion depends on the ATO tests and the facts. The Australian tax year runs from 1 July to 30 June; check income statement in myGov/ATO and file tax return or notify if not required. Foreign income, stock exchanges, investments and treaties require individual analysis.
Superannuation
The employer pays super contributions when the requirements are met. Choose or verify your fund, see that deposits arrive, and consolidate duplicate accounts with caution. Those who permanently leave Australia with an expired temporary visa can consider the Departing Australia Superannuation Payment: it is taxed and the procedure should not be confused with a normal tax refund.
Financial security
ATO, banks and universities do not ask for immediate payment in gift cards or cryptocurrencies. Be wary of calls threatening arrest or visa cancellation. Use unique passwords and MFA, don’t borrow your account or identity to receive money, and verify every change of provider bank details via a separate channel.
Official sources to open before acting
Annual budget and cash flow
Transform every cost into AUD and due date: tuition installments, visa, OSHC, flights, bonds, rent, utilities, transportation, books, telephone and emergencies. Use three exchange scenarios and don’t convert everything in one day. The bond is tied up money, not a monthly expense, but must be available upon entry. Keep two essential months out of the account used online.
Open and secure your account
Compare Financial Claims Scheme coverage, fees, ATM and transfers. Complete KYC with consistent data and update tax residency declarations when required. Enable apps and MFA on secure device. Do not share SMS code with anyone posing as a fraud team: call the number on the back of the card.
PAYG and income statement
Each employer communicates payroll via Single Touch Payroll. Check income statement in myGov linked to ATO and wait for tax ready status before declaration. Add more jobs and bank interests. Keep deductions only if directly linked to income, paid by you and documented; ordinary clothes, commuting to work and private expenses do not become deductible because they are useful.
Tax residency and foreign income
The test does not coincide with the 183 days automatically. Expected duration, home, routine and bonds matter. A tax resident may have to declare worldwide income; a non-resident follows different rules and thresholds. The Italy-Australia convention can coordinate double taxation but does not eliminate the declaration. For investments, foreign rental or grants, ask a registered tax agent.
Tax returns and deadlines
The self-lodgment deadline is normally October 31st, but checks every year; a tax agent registered by the relevant date may have a different timetable. Be wary of “guaranteed” refunds. Check credit account and notice of assessment. If you made a mistake use amendment, don’t ignore it.
Superannuation in detail
Check concessional contributions, fees and insurance within the fund. Multiple accounts eat into your balance; Before consolidating, check for leaks in roofing. At the end of the stay, DASP requests exit and visa status according to ATO; the withholding tax can be significant. Do not close your email and account before receiving documents.
Debt, credit and Buy Now Pay Later
BNPL and cards turn small expenses into close obligations. Read fees and credit impact. Don’t co-sign loans or phone contracts for roommates. If you are unable to pay, contact the hardship team and National Debt Helpline before using high cost loans.
Remittance and proof of funds
Use regulated operators, compare spreads in addition to the fee and send a small sum first. Maintain receipt, origin and conversion for bank, visa and tax. Don’t receive money from strangers in exchange for a commission: it’s a typical money mule scheme.
ABN and self-employment
Evaluate control, tools, risk and possibility of delegation: the name contractor does not decide the nature. A true sole trader manages invoices, records, taxes and insurance; GST registration depends on the threshold and type of business. Set aside an allowance for taxes and do not deduct mixed expenses without apportionment.
Practical case manual
These scenarios do not replace an individual assessment: they serve to recognize the problem, stop the risky action and identify the next control.
- Case 1— The bank blocks an international transfer: prepares origination of funds, tuition invoice and identification; do not fragment operations to avoid controls.
- Case 2— You have two jobs: check TFN declarations and comprehensive withholdings. An expected refund is not available money until the ATO issues assessments.
- Case 3— Receive a scholarship: read if it is taxable based on nature and conditions, not just name. Keep award letters and service obligations.
- Case 4— Work from home as a contractor: separate private and productive parts with reasonable method; maintain floor area, hours and invoices.
- Case 5— You buy laptops for study and work: the personal study part does not become deductible. Amortization or immediate deduction depends on cost and use.
- Case 6— Employer doesn’t pay super: compare payslips, fund statements and quarterly maturities; use ATO unpaid super process with evidence.
- Case 7— You have multiple super accounts: check insurance before consolidating; a closure can eliminate useful coverage.
- Case 8— Leave Australia: keep email, myGov and details until tax and DASP are concluded. Do not entrust access to unverified intermediaries.
- Case 9— Receive ATO call with threat: hang up and call back official number. Arrest, gift card and immediate transfer indicate scam.
- Case 10— A friend uses your account for salary: decline; you can become a money mule and have to explain suspicious income or transactions.
- Case 11— Currency exchange gets worse: pay according to plan and buffer, don’t use leverage or crypto to recover the difference.
- Case 12— Rent and tuition coincide: create weekly sinking funds and calendar. Don’t use credit cards to mask recurring deficits.
- Case 13— You want to use BNPL for spending: add all future installments and fees; the available limit does not equal income.
- Case 14— Receive refund from provider: save calculation and exchange. Check implications on CoE and visa before spending it.
- Case 15— A tax agent promises great deductions: check Tax Practitioners Board registration and approve only real data.
Personal financial system in four logical accounts
Divide the money at least in accounting terms: tuition and annual obligations; fixed expenses; weekly life; emergencies/travel. Automate transfers after each entry. Calculate weekly, monthly and annual costs without mixing frequencies. For weekly rent use 52 weeks, not four per month. Update the budget when there is a change, an increase in rent or a reduction in shifts.
Don’t use the total balance as a measure of how much you can spend: subtract bills already accrued, future tuition, taxes to be set aside and bonds. Maintain a runway expressed in weeks of essential expenses. If it falls below your chosen threshold, reduce discretionary spending and contact your provider/creditor before the deadline.
Fiscal and documentary register
Maintain income statements, payslips, bank interest, scholarship letters, invoices, receipts and conversion calculations. For each deduction, note the income link, private share and proof of payment. Photographs of receipts must show vendor, date, amount and asset; the simple bank statement proves the payment but not always the nature.
Use your official tax account and check that your employer and bank details are correct. Do not leave statements with an intermediary without review. Ask for a copy of the return and assessment. A large refund does not prove that the return is correct; it can turn into debt after inspection.
Fraud protection
If you receive an urgent request, stop the channel and check via app or official number. Do not share passwords, OTPs, remote access or seed phrases. For an invoice with changed details, call an already known contact. Set notification and transfer limits; immediately block card and contact bank if you have authorized fraud.
Document reference number, recipient, time and conversation. Report early: Banks and platforms have operational windows. Change credentials starting from the email, check forwarding rules and open sessions. A complaint does not guarantee recovery but protects reconstruction.
Prepare for departure
Before closing your account, complete your final salary, bonds, tax assessment, any pension/super and refunds. Download statement and update foreign address. Maintain a method for MFA or change number early. Check tax obligations for the year of departure and keep documents for the applicable legal period.
