Information guide for international students, not individual legal, tax or medical advice. Requirements, amounts and procedures may change: always check the relevant source before acting.

Operational framework

In Denmark citizenship, duration, type of course, address and work produce separate practices. SIRI, municipality, Skattestyrelsen, university and health region do not replace each other: every decision must be verified with the competent authority.

EU citizens

Rule: An Italian can work without a permit, but the work must be real and declared and does not automatically replace the other student residence requirements.

What to do: Get contract, tax card and payslip; record hours and leave even if the employer uses digital systems.

Operational verification: Keep source, complete document, date, receipt and identity of the competent office; Don’t just rely on a verbal response.

Non-EU students

Rule: For approved state programs, the student permit normally allows work for up to ninety hours per month from September to May and full-time in June, July and August. The text of the permit prevails.

What to do: Check the decision and add the hours of all employers: exceeding the limit can lead to sanctions or revocation.

Operational verification: Keep source, complete document, date, receipt and identity of the competent office; Don’t just rely on a verbal response.

Non-state programs

Rule: For applications submitted from May 2, 2025, some non-state programs do not grant the right to work that existed for previous cases.

What to do: Check provider, application date and personal conditions before accepting shifts.

Operational verification: Keep source, complete document, date, receipt and identity of the competent office; Don’t just rely on a verbal response.

Contract

Rule: For jobs that exceed thresholds of duration and hours, the employer must provide essential information on working conditions within the established deadlines.

What to do: Check pay, guaranteed hours, probationary period, location, notice, pension, holidays and collective agreement.

Operational verification: Keep source, complete document, date, receipt and identity of the competent office; Don’t just rely on a verbal response.

Pay and collective agreements

Rule: There is no general legal minimum wage: many minimums derive from collective agreements, sector and qualification.

What to do: Identify the applicable agreement and compare basic salary, evening supplements, holidays and pension; Don’t assume that every offer is legal just because it’s signed.

Operational verification: Keep source, complete document, date, receipt and identity of the competent office; Don’t just rely on a verbal response.

Holidays and holiday allowance

Rule: Holidays and related compensation follow the Danish Holiday Act and the system applicable to the relationship; FerieKonto may receive provisions.

What to do: Check payslip and holiday balance and don’t confuse holiday allowance with bonus.

Operational verification: Keep source, complete document, date, receipt and identity of the competent office; Don’t just rely on a verbal response.

SU as an EU worker

Rule: An EU citizen does not automatically receive SU. They may apply for equal status, for example as an EU worker, demonstrating real and continuous work; SU normally indicates at least ten to twelve hours per week and evaluates the case individually.

What to do: Do not build the budget on the SU before the decision and immediately report reduction or loss of work.

Operational verification: Keep source, complete document, date, receipt and identity of the competent office; Don’t just rely on a verbal response.

Controversies and security

Rule: Discrimination, unpaid wages, unsafe environment and fictitious classification require different channels: union, Labor Court, Working Environment Authority or court.

What to do: Keep your contract, shifts, messages and payslips and ask for assistance quickly because deadlines can be short.

Operational verification: Keep source, complete document, date, receipt and identity of the competent office; Don’t just rely on a verbal response.

Documentary protocol

Create three files: stay and CPR; home and insurance; work, SU and taxes. Save the version of the page consulted, the submitted package, receipt and complete response. If you change course, job, address or coverage, review all related paperwork before the change.
